I don't know whether it because I am getting older, but I seem to be getting into “Mood Music”. And what do I mean byMood music? The kind of music that is relaxing & soothing, where you wouldturn the lights down low, open a bottle of wine and relax in your favouritechair whilst listening to smooth nice music.
When I write this typeof music I start with a simple tune, add simple harmonies andcounter-harmonies, adding different instruments and gradually building it up. Itry to write original material, with an unique sound, but it’s harder to getpeople to understand what you are trying to do when you’re trying somethingdifferent.
I’m mainly inspired byBeatles and Bach: The Beatles were the first group to mix classical music withPop, with songs like Yesterday & Eleanor Rigby. But the classic style musicwas just a backing track, saying “Here!I have the simplicity of a pop tune and if you listen to the mix, there areinstruments in the background playing different melodies, blending in and out”. And Bach was very good at creating these kindof scores. If you listen to BrandenburgConcertos you'll understand whatI mean.
But as I write“Royalty Free Music”, mainly for charity, I realise that people want somethingthey can use to put on the web, or for videos - or maybe just a snippet for 20second adverts. So when I write my own versions of these types of piecesthey’re a little more simple, lending themselves quite well for this kind ofuse. It’s not expensive and most help charities such as TY GOBAITH – HOPE HOUSENorth Wales Children's Hospice, the local hospice to where I live in Conwy.
